Changes to MBNA Alaska Airlines WEMC

As of August 31, 2023, the relationship between The Toronto-Dominion Bank operating a division as MBNA ("MBNA") and Alaska Airlines is ending. 

Changes starting on September 1, 2023:

• The name of your Alaska Airlines® World Elite® Mastercard® credit card will become the MBNA Rewards World Elite® Mastercard® credit card. 
• You will start earning MBNA Rewards Points.
• You will be able to redeem MBNA Rewards Points for travel, cash back, brand-name merchandise and gift cards from participating retailers.
• Within the next year, you’ll also be able to redeem MBNA Rewards Points for Alaska Airlines Miles on a one-to-one basis (1 MBNA Rewards Point = 1 Alaska Airlines Mile), with the ability to earn up to 5 MBNA Rewards Points per dollar spent on eligible purchases. That could add up to a lot of Alaska Airlines Miles with this new redemption option!
• As previously communicated, effective July 31, 2023 your Annual Fee will be $120 for the primary cardholder, and $50 for one Authorized User (if you have one).

You can get 5X rewards points on purchases in Walmart, T&T superstore, Real Canadian Superstore, ENMAX, Shaw etc (not on Costco. it is 1X on Costco purchases) with MBNA Rewards WEMC. So, with additional 10% birthday bonus, you can earn ~5.5X for many daily spending. I have to say MBNA Rewards WEMC is one of the best credit cards in Canada for now.

MBNA Alaska MasterCard is back

MBNA Alaska MasterCard is back now. You can apply it from MBNA website or through GCR. If you apply it through GCR, you can get an extra $60 bonus.

Now, you need to spend $1000 or more within the first 90 days of your account opening to get the 25000 miles welcome bonus. And the annual income requirement for the WEMC version increases to $80000 personal or $150000 household. If you cannot meet this requirement, you may get the normal platinum plus version of this card. It seems no restriction on QC residents on the application.

No more MBNA Alaska MasterCard?

I cannot find the web page of MBNA Alaska MasterCard on MBNA Canada website (it was there yesterday). There is no more GCR bonus for this MasterCard either. If you search the https://www.alaskaair.com/, the Canada Alaska credit card page is also empty. So, I guess we may not be able to apply for this MBNA Alaska MasterCard anymore...

PS: A friend of mine just told me that right now you can still apply MBNA Alaska MasterCard through the phone (1-877-428-6060). If you want to get this card, please do it ASAP.

MBNA Rewards WEMC is a great card. You can get 2% cash back for every purchases on the card with only $89 annual fee.

But, what if the annual fee is $9? One of my friends, Wu Ha, just got this card today, and found its annual is only $9... If you don't have a $0 annual fee MBNA RWE, you may want to try this one...

MBNA SmartCard: from MasterCard to Visa?

If you have a MBNA Smart Cash Word MasterCard, when you log-in your account, you may found that your card is converted to Visa Infinite with a new card number.

Based on the online news, this is confirmed by MBNA. MBNA has converted the Smartcash account from a Mastercard product to a Visa product. The Smartcash rewards program will remain unchanged. People will be receiving a replacement card over the next few weeks and detailed information about the benefits associated with the Smartcash Visa.

Someone found that MBNA may also change the gas/grocery purchase cash back percentage (after 6 months) from 2% to 3%. We still don't know if this is a typo or true. Let's wait and see.
