Upcoming Changes on BMO Financial Products

One of my friends told me that there will be changes on some BMO credit cards:

My friend told me that I may see those changes on the Nov credit card statement.

I do have the BMO Air Miles WEMC, and I don't have the BMO Rewards WEMC. So, I only see bad news here. Considering that BMO just reduced the earning rate of Cash Back WEMC from 1.75% to 1.5%, I was wondering what will happen next to other BMO products...

There is a bad news for BMO Rewards WEMC: the number of points needed to redeem for $1 in travel rewards will increase from 100 to 135 BMO rewards points, effective Jan 15, 2018! This makes the return ratio decreased from 2% to 1.48%, which is even lower than the current BMO Cashback WEMC (1.5%)... The points value for gift cards/merchandise/financial contribution redemption will be improved by up to 25% (but I am not interested in those items...). I think I may move to RBC WestJet WEMC or MBNA Alaska WEMC after Jan 2018.

BTW, BMO will also make some changes to their everyday bank plan fees, effective Dec 1, 2017.

AmEx SPG: is the END near?

We always hear news regarding SPG-Marriott merger. It seems that the merger will be completed in 2018. So, recently I got many similar questions from our readers:"Should I apply the AmEx SPG now?"

This is a simple question and please let me answer it here: you should apply the AmEx SPG if you don't have one now. The value of the 20000 SPG welcome bonus is around $600, and the annual fee is only $120. It may be discontinued soon, so what? You should apply it before it is gone. In today's Canadian market condition, one Hard Pull for $480 is not a bad deal.

Also, one of my friends in Japan told me today that he got an email from AmEx, which indicates that the AmEx SPG (Japan) could be available till Dec 31, 2018. So, from my point of view, there is nothing to worry about for now.

There is one thing strange that different person may get different offers. For example, some one got offer like "Earn 7/6/5/3 points for every $1 spent" for Amazon (and this is NOT based on your Marriott Elite level). And the offer may change from time to time. I got Amazon "5 points/$1" at first, and it changed to "6 points/$1" after 1 hour... Interesting...

Earn Rewards Points by shopping with the new mobile app and desktop extension. Members earn an additional 1,000 points for their first transaction of $25 or more. Those who pay with their Marriott Rewards credit card will earn 25% more bonus points after each transaction.

This 25% bonus with Marriott Visa is nice. From the terms, it shows that you can get this 25% bonus if you are the holder of a Marriott credit card, which means that you may get this 25% bonus using other credit cards (AmEx SPG) as long as you are the holder of a Marriott Visa (another reason for me to keep my Chase Marriott Visa...).

PC Financial -> Simplii Financial

I think many PC Financial clients already got the updates that PC Financial users will transition to CIBC’s new Simplii Financial mobile and online brand, with their deposits, mortgages and loans effective Nov 1, 2017. There will be no changes on the PC Financial MasterCard.

Simplii customers will be able to use CIBC’s automated teller machines for free as they did under PC Financial, as well conduct their banking online, via telephone and mobile. But Simplii Financial will not have any physical branches.

Here I want to mention a few things that are not included in the FAQ:

1) Simplii Financial will waive the Interac e-transfer fee after Nov 1, 2017

2) With the agreement between CIBC and Loblaw Company, Simplii Financial will not issue any credit cards within the next year. And Loblaw will not start any banking services for at least 12 months.

3) Between November 1, 2017 – April 13, 2018, Simplii customers will receive a newly-branded debit card to replace their current PC Financial branded card. Hope you will like the new debit card.

4) In Nov, 2017, Simplii will offer a new savings account rate promotion of 3% interest in new deposits. If you have high deposits in your current PC accounts, you should transfer it out before Nov 1, and then transfer back when the promotion starts.
