Etihad Guest Leaving AmEx Membership Rewards in Canada

If you're a Canadian American Express cardholder who has been eyeing Etihad Guest as a Membership Rewards transfer partner, your window is closing. Effective June 20, 2026, Etihad Airways' Etihad Guest loyalty program will no longer be available as a transfer partner for Canadian AmEx Membership Rewards cardmembers. Any transfers you want to make must be completed on or before that date — no exceptions.

If you have Membership Rewards points and were planning to use Etihad Guest for an upcoming trip, here's what to consider:

  • Act before June 20, 2026. Transfers must be initiated and completed by this date. Don't wait until the last minute — allow a few days for processing.
  • Only transfer if you have a concrete redemption plan. Transferring points "just in case" is rarely a good strategy. Etihad Guest miles expire after 18 months of inactivity, and if you don't have a specific award booking in mind, you risk those miles sitting idle.
  • Check Etihad's award availability first. Before moving any points, confirm that your desired flight and cabin class are actually available as an award booking on the dates you need.

This is a meaningful but not devastating loss for most Canadian AmEx cardmembers. The 1:0.75 conversion rate was already a deterrent for casual users, and Etihad Guest's niche appeal — best suited for premium cabin redemptions on Middle Eastern routes — meant only a small segment of Canadian travellers were actively using this pathway.

That said, if you're one of those cardmembers who had a trip to Abu Dhabi, the Maldives, or another Etihad destination in mind, June 20, 2026 is a hard deadline you can't afford to miss. For everyone else, the Canadian AmEx Membership Rewards lineup still includes strong transfer partners — Aeroplan, British Airways Avios, Asia Miles and Air France-KLM Flying Blue Miles among them — that offer competitive value and broader redemption networks for Canadian travellers.
